Endowed professorship for Secure ID

In June 2007, Bundesdruckerei endowed Germany's first professorship for "Secure Identity" (technologies for securing identities) at Freie Universität (FU) Berlin, thereby promoting the development of a future technology which is also relevant for Germany. The endowed professorship was created for an initial term of 5 years and will be based in the department of mathematics and computer science of FU Berlin.

The endowed professorship is designed to promote the internationally important subject of civilian security research and specifically the secure identification of individuals within the scope of interdisciplinary research approaches and to develop new technological solutions. The new chair is also expected to further enhance acceptance of new technologies and ID security solutions.

Chaired by Prof. Dr. Volker Roth, the first seminar on the topic of IT security started in the summer term of 2009 as part of the informatics course. Next term, guest readings are to be held by Bundesdruckerei experts and in the long run, the seminar is to be expanded to include a Master's degree course. This will take at least two years of planning, so Prof. Roth. The curriculum focuses on the fundamentals of security and identity technology, secure business processes, as well as the legal and social aspects of identity management. Asked about the current course, Prof. Roth says: "You have to imagine the course as a pipeline. We will progress from one term to the next, we will add exciting topics and we will hence enlarge the offering to our students.

With this endowed professorship, Bundesdruckerei is making an important contribution towards the innovation drive of the city of Berlin and Freie Universität Berlin. Graduates in this subject can successfully work in all kinds of executive functions and in highly innovative research and development departments of companies which, like Bundesdruckerei, specialise in secure identity management.
